Evidence Supports Benefits of Eating Organic
More evidence supports the benefits of eating organic. A recent study was reported to prove that fruit grown without chemicals contained significantly larger quantities of polyphenols and antioxidants -- compounds associated with better health.

Two identical plots of kiwifruit were grown side-by-side by scientists at the University of California at Davis. One plot of the fruit was grown organically and the other using a standard mix of herbicides, pesticides and chemical fertilizer.

After harvesting, and storing for different periods of time, the organically grown kiwifruit were found to contain 18% higher levels of polyphenols and 27% higher levels of antioxidants than those grown using chemicals. Polyphenols found in red wine, red grapes, red berries and extra virgin olive oil have been previously associated with reduction of cholesterol levels and improved blood circulation. Antioxidants help protect against free radicals that can damage cellular structures and DNA.

The authors of this article contend that this is one of the first studies that factor out all other possible influences in comparing conventionally grown and organically grown plants.

Omega-3s May Reduce Alzheimer’s Risk
In study of mice, fatty acid lowered buildup of protein
linked to disease

A fatty acid found in fish may help thwart the buildup of brain proteins linked to Alzheimer’s disease, a study in mice suggests.

In Alzheimer’s disease, lesions known as “plaques” and ”tangles” form in the brain, due to the abnormal clumping of two proteins called beta-amyloid and tau. The mouse study found that a diet rich in the fatty acid DHA might interfere with this process.

DHA, short for docosahexaenoic acid, is a type of omega-3 fatty acid found mainly in fatty fish like salmon and mackerel, and to a lesser extent in seaweed, eggs and DHA-fortified foods.

While the new findings come from studying mice, they complement studies in humans that have linked higher fish intake, as well as higher blood levels of DHA, to a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Such research suggests that the animal findings might well translate to people, Dr. Frank LaFerla, the senior author on the new study, told Reuters Health.

What’s needed now, according to LaFerla, are clinical trials involving people with early-stage Alzheimer’s to see whether DHA supplements can slow the progression of the disease. Martek has just launched such a study, he said.

Supplement Tip - when choosing your Omega-3 supplement, look for one that contains at least 50% DHA compared to EPA. This way fewer capsules are required to obtain the desired intake (about 1,500 mg DHA) and optimal benefits.

Safest fish to eat - Wild Alaska salmon, anchovies, sardines, Atlantic herring, Atlantic mackerel.
Yes, you can safely eat (these) fish 2-3 times a week.

Best way to get Omega-3 from your eggs is to eat them poached, soft boiled, or hard boiled. Breaking the yolk or frying them destroys the sensitive fatty acids. Yes, you can eat eggs everyday (average of 2) - just eat them poached, soft boiled or hard boiled.
