My comments on:
"Study Raises Concerns over Multivitamins and Prostate
Cancer"
By Stephen Daniells 5/16/2007 -
A new study from
the US National Cancer Institute has reported that
taking excessive amounts of multivitamins may increase
the risk of advanced and fatal prostate cancers by 30
percent.
"In this large prospective study, we found that
multivitamin use was unrelated to overall risk of
total and organ-confined prostate cancer," wrote
Lawson.
"Because multivitamin supplements consist of a
combination of several vitamins and men using high
levels of multivitamins were also more likely to take
a variety of individual supplements, we were unable to
identify or quantify individual components responsible
for the associations we observed," wrote the
researchers.
They add that the positive associations with excessive
multivitamin use were strongest in men with a family
history of the disease, or amongst men who took
additional micronutrient supplements, including
beta-carotene, selenium, or zinc.
The research is at odds with a nested study published
recently in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition
that reported that an increased selenium intake in
combination with a daily multivitamin may reduce the
risk of prostate cancer by about 40 percent.
Commenting independently on the research, Liz Baker,
science information officer at British charity Cancer
Research UK, said: "It's still not entirely clear what
factors can affect a man's risk of developing prostate
cancer. And there is conflicting evidence on the pros
and cons of vitamin supplements. These products don't
seem to give us the same benefits as vitamins that
naturally occur in our food.
Baker said that the charity continues to encourage
consumers to eat a diet rich in fibre, vegetables and
fruit, and low in red and processed meat.
The results were challenged by Daniel Fabricant, vice
president of scientific and regulatory affairs at
US-based trade association the Natural Products
Association (NPA).
"This is a cohort study, which is not as reliable as
the 'gold standard,' a randomized controlled trial,"
said Fabricant. "As with many cohort studies, there
are a large number of variables involved. These
missing observations are filled in by the authors'
evaluation of the numbers and then the resulting bias,
of which there is a great deal in this study. This is
why the best studies ask one research question at a
time with one clear-cut outcome being measured.
"[Also], considering what a strong factor family risk
is for all cancers, prostate cancer may also increase
in men who have a family history of breast cancer.
Other potential risk factors of this nature were not
accounted for in the study," he said.

Beth's comments:
I agree that this does not appear to be a very good
study, not taking in consideration family history or other risk
factors. We also don't know what kind of multi-vitamins they were
taking....there are hundreds, if not more... Does this study prove
they are ALL "bad"? Absolutely not, Personally, I am actually not a
big fan of multi-vitamin formulas. Instead, I recommend a natural
food-based product containing over 400 different nutritional
components called Chlorella, which is green algae. (Have you ever seen
400 different nutrients in a multi?) In Chlorella, these nutrients
are in perfect balance and highly assimiable - unlike a man-made
product containing handful of nutrients, (often synthetics) and in
amounts "man" chooses to combine. Man can never do a better job on
what God has created for us.
RAW Milk May Reduce Asthma and Allergy
Regular consumption of unpasteurised farm milk may offer protection
from range of allergies.
This new research appears to be in line with previous studies that
have reported that probiotic bacteria may reduce the risk of certain
allergies like eczema and asthma in infants.
Many studies, both epidemiological and animal, have reported that
disorder of the intestinal microflora is closely related to food
allergy development, said the researchers, suggesting that the
non-pathogenic content of farm (raw) milk could offer an interesting
avenue of future study.

IN BETH'S KITCHEN
With growing concerns over rising obesity rates in the United States
has come a growing concern over the excessive intake of carbohydrates.
What is often lost in the trend towards reducing carbohydrate intake
is that it is not merely the quantity, but the quality of the carbs
we eat that makes a difference as to whether they promote weight gain.
For example, some of our most nutritious foods, including starchy
vegetables and legumes, are rich in carbohydrates. One of the ways to
decide whether a carbohydrate-rich food is one you want to include in
your diet is to look at its score on the glycemic index, a numerical
scale that measures how quickly and how high a particular food will
increase blood sugar levels. Substantial research indicates that a
low glycemic diet has many health benefits, including weight control.
High in fiber, high in protein ! and low on the glycemic index,
legumes, such as garbanzo beans, are healthy carbohydrates and a
highly recommended
Fresh Minted Garbanzo Salad
This is a very refreshing summer salad, and can be
made in just 15 minutes. It is high in protein, and
can be kept in your refrigerator for a few days
getting more flavorful as it marinates. It is a quick
and easy way to have the healthy benefits of beans in
your diet in a light, low fat way.
Prep and Cook Time: 15 minutes
Ingredients:
2 medium fresh tomatoes, seeds and excess pulp
removed, chopped about ½ inch
2 cups peeled diced cucumber,
(cut lengthwise and scoop out seeds)
dice about ½ inch ½ medium onion, finely minced
(I prefer using green onions)
2 medium cloves garlic, pressed
1 15 oz can (or precooked and cooked)
garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained well
3 TBS fresh lemon juice
2½ TBS chopped fresh mint
2 TBS extra virgin olive oil
sea salt & cracked black pepper to taste
1 medium head romaine lettuce,
use tender whole leaves for bed
Directions:
Mix all ingredients except lettuce together
and chill.
This is best if it chills for at least 15 minutes.
Serve on a bed of lettuce.
Serves 4
Healthy Cooking Tip: Do not add sea salt to this
salad until it's ready to serve. The sea salt will
draw out the water from the cucumber and dilute the
flavor.

SCRIPTURE
|
For this God is our God for ever and ever: He will be
our guide even unto death. Psalms 48:14
Reflection
When the storms of life assail us and we feel as
though lost at sea, take heart. Our Lord will never
fail to lead us in the paths of righteousness,
conforming us daily to the pure, holy, and loving
image of His very Son, Christ our saviour! We must
seek Him and remember that all we go through has a
purpose for those that love Him. Keep your eyes on Him
and not the storm.
As most of you know, I moved my office and home in the
last month... to put it mildly, it has been an
extremely challenging time. In faith, I have pressed
on forward knowing that when God promised to give the
Isrealites the Promised Land, they had to FIGHT for
it.
(I was reading Joshua 11)

QUESTIONS and ANSWERS
Q and A:
Q: If Canola Oil isn't that healthy to use in
cooking.... what is a good replacement oil?
A: Organic extra virgin olive oil, butter or extra
virgin coconut oil. In your mixer: mix up 1/2 olive
oil and 1/2 butter and keep in fridge - good for
spread or cooking.
