Almonds Good For Diabetics... and the rest of us too.
|
Almonds lower the risk of oxidative damage to proteins by limiting
blood glucose changes after a meal and by providing antioxidants;
these actions may also underlie the link between consumption of nuts
and decreased risk of coronary heart disease, according to researchers
at the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, St. Michael's
Hospital here.
Fifteen healthy subjects ate two control meals consisting of bread,
and three test meals: almonds and bread; parboiled rice; and instant
mashed potatoes—all balanced in carbohydrate, fat and protein (using
butter and cheese). Researchers obtained blood samples at baseline
and again four hours after eating (postprandial). Data from the three
meals were pooled (P = 0.021); glycemic indices for rice (38) and
almond meals (55) were less than for the potato meal (94; P < 0.003),
as were the post meal areas under the insulin concentration time
curve (P < 0.001). No post-meal treatment differences were seen in
total antioxidant capacity, however, the serum protein sulfhydryl
group (thiol) concentration increased following the almond meal
(15 mmol/L), indicating less oxidative protein damage; and decreased
after the control bread, rice, and potato meals (–10 mmol/L). The
change in protein thiols was also negatively related to the post-meal
incremental peak glucose (P = 0.026) and peak insulin responses
(P = 0.046).
Researchers concluded almonds likely lower the risk of oxidative
damage to proteins by decreasing the glycemic excursion and by
providing antioxidants. They also noted these actions may relate to a
decreased risk of CHD. The study was published in the Journal of
Nutrition (136: 2987-2992, 2006).
More Support for Coffee’s Protective Role Against Diabetes
Drinking coffee could cut the risk of developing type-2 diabetes
by over 40%, say Finnish researchers from the country’s National
Public Health Institute.
“Coffee drinking was associated with a reduced risk of type 2
diabetes in both men and women, and this association was observed
regardless of the levels of physical activity, BMI and alcohol
consumption,” wrote lead author Gang Hu in the International Journal
of Obesity. The research adds to previous large prospective studies
who have reported a beneficial link between coffee intake and the
risk of type-2 diabetes.
Hu and colleagues report that, after adjusting for a range of
possible confounders like age, systolic blood pressure, smoking, BMI,
fruit, vegetable, alcohol, bread, sausage and tea consumption,
drinking between three and six cups a day was associated with a
reduction in the risk of developing type-2 diabetes of 23% in men and
29% in women. Drinking seven+ cups a day was associated with a
reduction in the risk of developing type-2 diabetes of 34% in men and
48% in women
“Among obese and inactive people, coffee drinking of seven cups or
more daily reduced the risk of type 2 diabetes to half,” wrote Hu.
The researchers state that association between diabetes and coffee
appears to be complex. Indeed, this study and previous studies have
reported that coffee's magnesium content could improve insulin
sensitivity. Additionally, the range of antioxidant polyphenols may
explain some of protective benefits.
A study published in June ‘06 in the journal Archives of Internal
Medicine also reported that drinking six+ cups of coffee every day
could reduce the risk of developing type-2 diabetes by more than 20%,
but if the coffee is decaffeinated, the reduction in risk rises to
over 30% – suggesting the benefits of coffee are not due to caffeine.

factors to the risk of type 2 diabetes: a prospective study in

Beth's comments: While the study shows that coffee can have some
benefits to ward off diabetes, there is no comment on the fact that
SEVEN cups of coffee a day is quite a bit of coffee, especially for
someone with high blood pressure, osteoporosis or problems with an
acidic system, this much coffee might not be such a good idea.
My recommendation is that if you have diabetes or are at risk, and
enjoy a couple cups of coffee a day, there is probably no reason to
be concerned and it looks like it could even be helpful, unless you
have concerns for the other health issues I mentioned. Coffee is very
acidic and can deplete the body of minerals. To be sure, you may want
to check the pH of your urine from time to time to check your mineral
status. An acidic pH could be a warning sign for bone loss or other
problems.

Berries stop Cancer Cell Growth in the Lab
Antioxidant-rich extracts from a wide range of berries, including
blueberries, strawberries and raspberries, could inhibit cell growth
and spread for a wide range of cancers, researchers from UCLA have
reported.
The researchers, led by Navinda Seeram from UCLA's Center for Human
Nutrition, characterised the phenolic content of six berries and
tested their ability to inhibit the growth of human oral, prostate,
breast and colon cell lines. Red and black raspberries, cranberries,
blackberries, blueberries, and strawberries contain phenolic
constituents: anthocyanins, flavonols, flavanols, ellagitannins,
galltannins, proanthocyanidins, and phenolic acids. Each berry had a
different and unique phenolic content.
Concentrations of berry extracts were tested for their ability to
stop the spread and induction of programmed cell death (apoptosis) of
human oral (KB, CAL-27), prostate (LNCaP), breast (MCF-7) and colon
(HT-29, HCT116) cell lines.
The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry article reports
that cancer cell proliferation was reduced in a dose-dependent manner.
The researchers report that extracts from black raspberries,
blackberries and strawberries were the most effective against the
cancer cell lines studied. The research suggest that the anthocyanins
may be the major contributors toward programmed cell death, but
significant further study is required.

The Worldwide Obesity Epidemic is More Harmful Than Malnutrition
Obesity could be as economically damaging, worldwide, as malnutrition,
which reduces the production of poorer countries by as much as 3%.
Even now, 6% of health costs in Europe and Central Asia are a result
of obesity in adults. In 1992, obesity cost France $12.1 billion in
direct costs alone, and in 2000 obesity cost the state of California
$22 billion.
Obesity also reduces life expectancy, which also has an effect on the
economy. A recent study predicted that men could live five years less
by 2050. European health ministers from 53 countries have approved
the world's first charter to fight obesity, drafted by the World
Health Organization. The WHO charter aims to reverse the trend of
increasing obesity by 2015. One of the charter's more controversial
clauses is an obligation for legislation requiring private businesses
to limit the marketing of fatty, sugary foods to children.
Obesity has tripled over the course of the last 20 years, and 10% of
children and 20% of adults will be obese in Europe and Central Asia
by 2010 if present trends continue.
If people ate well they would avoid obesity without regimented
exercise. Certainly, moderate exercise would improve their health
even more, but exercise in itself is not the answer to physical
fitness. A natural whole food diet, eliminating all processed and
refined 'foods' (they are not food).
If people would simply stop buying, and consuming 'convenient' foods
and 'fast' foods they would experience a remarkable health
recovery ... guaranteed. Eat only whole foods. Prepared, highly
refined, and processed food are just about all you find on the
grocery shelves ... likewise with almost all restaurant fare.
WHAT IS STARVING OUR BODIES, is MAKING US OBESE AT THE SAME TIME!
Most obese people are also malnourished. In order to achieve optimum
health one must be nourished well according to his/her genetic and
environmental demands. In order to treat obesity, you must deal with
the less than optimum nutritional status of the individual, not just
cut calories.
Even though organic foods are pricier than the factory farm products,
they actually cost less because when you are eating whole foods you
don't have to eat as much to satisfy hunger and nutritional needs.

Ginger: Kills Ovarian Cancer!
Ordinary ginger causes ovarian cancer cells to die, highlighting the
spice's potential in fighting the killer disease.
Not only did ginger trigger ovarian cancer cell death, it did so in a
way that may prevent tumor cells from becoming resistant to treatment,
a common problem with chemotherapy.
Researchers at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center
dissolved ginger powder in a solution and applied it to ovarian cancer
cells in a laboratory. Ginger caused two kinds of cancer cell death.
The first is called apoptosis, in which the cells essentially commit
suicide. The second type of cell death is autophagy, in which cells
digest or attack themselves.
"Most ovarian cancer patients develop recurrent disease that
eventually becomes resistant to standard chemotherapy -- which is
associated with resistance to apoptosis. If ginger can cause
autophagic cell death in addition to apoptosis, it may circumvent
resistance to conventional chemotherapy," study author Dr. J. Rebecca
Liu, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, explained in a
prepared statement.
It's already known that ginger helps control inflammation, which
contributes to the development of ovarian cancer cells. By halting
inflammation, ginger may stop cancer cells from growing, the
researchers suggested.

Sweet Potatoes
Did you know that sweet potatoes are classified as an anti-diabetic
food? Recent studies have shown that sweet potatoes help stabilize
blood sugar levels and lower insulin resistance, a problem caused by
cells not responding to the presence of insulin, which then prevents
the transport of sugars from the blood into the cells. Some of sweet
potatoes' anti-diabetic properties are believed to come from their
high concentration of carotenoids such as beta carotene (the redder
varieties also contain lycopene), which, along with their vitamin A
and vitamin C, act as powerful antioxidants to help combat free
radical activity that would otherwise damage cells and cell membranes.
Sweet potatoes also contain unique root storage proteins with potent
antioxidant activity. These proteins, along with sweet potatoes' high
content of carotenoids and vitamin C, may also make them helpful in
reducing inflammation, such as that involved in conditions like asthma,
osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
So how do I make em?
The easy way #1 - crockpot
Cut up washed sweet potatoes (leave skin on) in big chunks - place in
crockpot.
add a few tablespoons orange juice concentrate.
a few tablespoons butter
about 1/4 cup water
if you want them savory, add a little sea salt and some fresh rosemary.
(orange and rosemary are awesome together!)
If you want them sweeter, a few drops of stevia will do.
(obviously, a bit of honey will work too)
I also like to add some cinnamon and cloves.
Turn on high and they are perfectly done in about 4 hours
The easy way #2 - baked
Cut washed sweet potatoes in half the long way, and again into
quarters or cut the half into three or four strips depending on the
size of the potato.
Place on baking sheet. Baste with olive oil and sprinkle with cumin
and sea salt
Bake in hot oven - about 375 degrees. They should be done in about
30 minutes, depending on the size of your strips. Poke with a fork to
see if they are soft.

SCRIPTURE
|
"You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You,
because he trusts in You." Isaiah 26:3, Amplified Version
Our peace always seems to be a major target at which the enemy aims.
Why is it we wake up in the middle of the night, and thoughts and
worries attack our mind robbing us of peace and sleep? Perhaps we're
not quite awake so our discernment isn't very sharp at the moment.
Finances, health, relationships, decisions . . . . We must have peace
(even while we sleep) in the midst of all these issues!
The Lord promises that He will give to His beloved even in their
sleep, and yet, so many attacks come during the night!
We need to be aware, day and night, of the condition of our soul
and what our minds are dwelling on!
Keep our minds concentrating on Him, trusting in Him. Be filled with
God, filled with peace, day and night!
